Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest was born Malik Isaac Taylor in Queens, New York, on this day 1970.

Phife, sometimes known as The Five Footer, started A Tribe Called Quest in the 1980’s with childhood friends Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White and Q-Tip, who Phife has known since the latter two were 5 years-old.

Phife Dawg would go on to record five classic albums with A Tribe Called Quest; 1990’s “People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm”, 1991’s “The Low End Theory”, 1993’s “Midnight Marauders”, 1996’s “Beats, Rhymes And Life” and 1998’s “The Love Movement”.

Phife, one of the most underrated lyricists in rap history, had what many called the best verse on the classic posse hit single “Scenario” (featuring Leaders Of The New School) from A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory” album.

Over the years Phife has also collaborated with Diamond D, Pete Rock, fellow Native Tongue members De La Soul, Dres and Chi-Ali and Fu-Schnickens on their 1992 classic smash hit “La Schmoove”.

In 2000, Phife released his long-awaited debut solo album “Ventilation: Da LP” on Groove Attack Records which produced the hits “Bend Ova” and “Flawless”.

Phife is reportedly working on a new solo album called “Songs In The Key Of Phyfe”.

Phife Dawg is also a playable character in the video games “NBA 2K7” and “NBA 2K9”.

Phife Dawg has also appeared in the films “Who’s The Man” and “Beats, Rhymes & Life – The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest”, directed by Michael Rappaport, which chronicled the forming, break up, reforming, break up and eventual reunion of A Tribe Called Quest as well as Phife’s successful battle with kidney disease, which saw him receive a new kidney in a transplant courtesy of his wife.

In addition to Phife’s extensive work in the music industry, in the 1990’s he started a professional sport management firm, which handled the careers of athletes in the NBA, NFL and MLB.

Phife Dawg is one of the most underrated MC’s in hip-hop history.
