Today in Hip Hop History
Mr. Magic dies of a heart attack in Brooklyn, New York, on this day in 2009.
Mr. Magic, born John Rivas in 1956, was the first broadcaster to host an exclusive hip-hop radio show on a major station.
Mr. Magic would debut on New York City’s WHBI-96.3FM with “The Rap Attack” in 1981.
A year later, Mr. Magic would move to the city’s WBLS-107.5 FM.
He later would host “The Classic Showcase” on Hot 97FM with Fly Ty and DJ Mr. Cee.
In 1984, Mr. Magic recorded an underground hit record called “Magic Message (There’s A Better Way)” on Posse Records which was produced by Spyder D.
