With the recent passing of what would’ve been his 89th birthday, we at The Diggers Union felt it was important to commemorate a musician who has influenced many, Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr. (known professionally as Cal Tjader). With our 3rd installment in our “Under the Influence” series, we’re delighted to bring you a brief introduction into his legacy and lengthy body of work. From his early days as a band leader (including his playing of percussion before his successful transition to vibraphone), to his foray into Latin Jazz, his catalog reminds us of the infinite possibilities of music, and what moods it can generate. With his collaborations with esteemed colleague Eddie Palmieri as well his backbone of percussion, Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, bear witness to the interpretation of standards and originals that remain staples in any music fan’s collection.
