June 2nd – B-Real of Cypress Hill was born Louis Freese in South Gate, California on this day in 1970.
B-Real first began rapping in the 1980’s with Senen Reyes a.k.a. Sen Dog, his brother Ulpiano Sergio Reyes a.k.a. Mellow Man Ace, who later left to pursue a solo career and Lawrence Muggerud a.k.a. DJ Muggs in a group called DVX or Devastating Vocal Exellence.
After The departure of Mellow Man Ace, the group changed their name to Cypress Hill, named after a street in the South Gate area where B-Real grew up.
Cypress Hill landed a deal with Columbia Records and released their multi-platinum-selling Self-Entitled debut album in 1991.
The album spawned the smash hits “The Phunky Feel One” and “How I Could Just Kill A Man”.
Cypress Hill’s tales of life in South Central Los Angeles, with a touch of Latino flavor, in the group’s brand of hip-hop, made them instant fan favorites and pioneers in the process.
