Born today in 1979 in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Detroit, Aaliyah Haughton began her career in 1994 under the guidance of her uncle, Blackground Records founder Barry Hankerson.
Aaliyah was only 15 when R. Kelly produced her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.
One in a Million came out in 1996. This time, Aaliyah — who’d secretly married and quickly divorced Kelly — worked with Timbaland.
Aaliyah co-starred in the 2000 action flick Romeo Must Die and posthumously in Queen of the Damned. She was cast in the Matrix sequels but died before filming had begun.
On August 25th, 2001, returning from the Bahamas after filming a video for “Rock the Boat,” Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a small plane crash.
In 2005, her rendition of the aria “Ave Maria” made history as the first single ever released first as a ringtone. Proceeds went to various charities.
