As a child, Doom moved with his family to Long Beach, New York where he grew up.

In 1988, he started the rap group KMD, an acronym for Kausing Much Damage, or A Positive Kause In A Much Damaged Society.

The other members included his younger brother DJ Subroc and Rodan who was later replaced by Onyx The Birthstone Kid.

KMD released 2 albums; 1991’s “Mr. Hood” on Elektra Records and 2001’s “Black Bastards” on Sub Verse Records.

They released the EP “Black Bastards Ruffs + Rares”, in 1998 on Fondle ‘Em Records.

Doom was known as Zev Love X in KMD.

In 1989, KMD were guests on 3rd Bass’ classic hit “The Gas Face” from their set “The Cactus Album”, on Def Jam Records.

In 1993, Doom’s brother Subroc was killed in an automobile accident in New York.

Doom, suffering from depression over the loss of his brother retreated from the industry from 1994 to 1997.

The group’s sophomore set “Black Bastards” was bootlegged during this time, making Doom a popular figure in the underground scene. “Black Bastards” would later be released officially after Doom’s rise in popularity.

In 1997, Doom started participating in freestyle ciphers in Manhattan’s Nuyorican Café with a stocking over his face to conceal his identity. He would now become the David Bowie of hip-hop, taking on all sorts of different identities.

He was now MF Doom but has also been characters such as Metal Fingers, Metal Face, The Super Villain, King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn.

The Doom character was based on Doctor Doom of Marvel Comics.

The mask that he would wear in his guise as MF Doom is based on a prop mask from the film “Gladiator.” Doom is rarely publicly seen or photographed without it.

In 1997, Doom signed with Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle ‘Em Records and released a few singles.

In 1999, he released his debut solo album “Operation: Doomsday” on Fondle ‘Em. He would release two more albums under the MF Doom or just simply Doom monikers, 2004’s “Mm…Food” and 2009’s “Born Like This”.
