Dr. Dre, not to be confused with legendary producer and former NWA member Dr. Dre, had a crew along with T-Money, Rapper G and Easy G called Concept Crew, who hosted a show at the station, on Monday nights called “The Operating Room.”
In 1986, they became a recording group called Original Concept and released a record called “Knowledge Me.”
However it would be the B-side “Can You Feel It” that would become the group’s signature tune, which has been sampled by several hip-hop artists over the years.
In 1988, the group signed to Def Jam Records and released their only album ever called “Straight From The Basement Of Kooley High”, which produced the hit “Pump That Bass”.
Doctor Dre would achieve his biggest success however when he teamed up with fellow New Yorker Ed Lover and the two became the comedic faction missing in hip-hop at the time.
Doctor Dre and Ed Lover became the Abbott & Costello of rap and enjoyed success with fans of all ages, especially the youth.
Their calling however, would be with MTV, who hired the duo to host the all music cable network’s first program devoted entirely to hip-hop, “Yo! MTV Raps!”.
Doctor Dre & Ed Lover would host the weekday version of the show while the legendary Fab 5 Freddy would host the weekend edition.
“Yo! MTV Raps!” with Dre and Lover ran from 1988 to 1995.
