On November 16th 1999,Dr. Dre released 2001.
It was initially titled to The Chronic 2000 as a sequel to his debut solo effort, The Chronic, but was re-titled 2001 after Death Row Records released an unrelated compilation album with the title Chronic 2000: Still Smokin in May 1999.
Rapper-producer Dr. Dre was born Andre Young February 18th, 1965 in Compton, California. He first made his name in the late ’80s alongside Eazy-E and Ice Cube in the original gangsta rap group, N.W.A.
Dre went solo after the group split in 1991, establishing himself as both artist and producer. In 1992, he released The Chronic, which many regard as a classic album, and introduced Snoop Dogg on “Deep Cover,” the title song of the film starring Laurence Fishburne. Dre then produced Snoop’s 1993 multi-platinum debut, Doggy Style.
By 1996, Dre had his own label, Aftermath, which released The Aftermath, containing the single “Been There, Done That.”
His next album, Chronic 2001, featured Mary J. Blige and a new protege, Eminem, on the single “Forgot About Dre.” The disc also scored a hit with “Still Dre.”
Outside of hip-hop, Dre has produced tracks for Toni Braxton (“Just Be a Man About It”) and Blige (“Family Affair”). In 2001, he won a Grammy for Producer of the Year.
Dre has also moved into acting. He made his screen debut in the 1996 crime drama Set It Off and then appeared in Training Day and with Snoop in The Wash.
Dre’s next protege, 50 Cent, became a rap star in 2003 and he produced his Grammy-nominated smash “In Da Club” and watched his debut disc, Get Rich or Die Trying, go multi-platinum.
Detox is supposed to be Dr. Dre’s final album, but it’s still yet to be released. Guests reportedly include DJ Khalil, Hi-Tek, RZA, Jay-Z, Warren G.
