Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/b>\u00a0(January 15, 1929\u00a0\u2013\u00a0April 4, 1968) was an American\u00a0clergyman<\/a>, activist, and prominent leader in the\u00a0African-American Civil Rights Movement<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He is best known for his role in the advancement of\u00a0civil rights<\/a>\u00a0using nonviolent\u00a0civil disobedience<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0King has become a national icon in the history of\u00a0American progressivism<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

A\u00a0Baptist<\/a>\u00a0minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He led the 1955\u00a0Montgomery Bus Boycott<\/a>\u00a0and helped found the\u00a0Southern Christian Leadership Conference<\/a>\u00a0(SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. King’s efforts led to the 1963\u00a0March on Washington<\/a>, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream<\/a>” speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history. He also established his reputation as a radical, and became an object of the\u00a0Federal Bureau of Investigation<\/a>‘s\u00a0COINTELPRO<\/a>\u00a0for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

On October 14, 1964, King received the\u00a0Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>\u00a0for combating racial inequality through\u00a0nonviolence<\/a>. In the next few years leading up to his death, he expanded his focus to include poverty and the\u00a0Vietnam War<\/a>\u2014alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled “Beyond Vietnam”. King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., called the\u00a0Poor People’s Campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

King was\u00a0assassinated on April 4, 1968<\/a>, in\u00a0Memphis<\/a>, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the\u00a0Presidential Medal of Freedom<\/a>\u00a0in 1977 andCongressional Gold Medal<\/a>\u00a0in 2004;\u00a0Martin Luther King, Jr. Day<\/a>\u00a0was established as a\u00a0U.S. federal holiday<\/a>\u00a0in 1986.\u00a0Hundreds of streets<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. and beyond have been renamed in his honor.<\/p>\n
