MC Lyte was born Lana Michelle Moorer in Brooklyn, New York, on this day in 1971.<\/p>\n
Lyte was signed to First Priority Records in 1987 and released her classic debut album \u201cLyte As A Rock\u201d the following year, becoming the first solo female rapper to do so.<\/p>\n
The classic album featured such hip-hop classics such as \u201c10% Dis\u201d, \u201cI Cram To Understand U (Sam)\u201d one of the first rap songs about crack addiction, and the hit single \u201cPaper Thin.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her brothers Milk Dee and Gizmo, who made up the duo Audio Two, also appeared on the album as well.<\/p>\n
Lyte released her sophomore set \u201cEyes On This\u201d in 1989. The album produced two more Lyte classics \u201cCha Cha Cha\u201d and \u201cCappucino.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyte has released five albums since then, most notably 1991\u2019s \u201cAct Like You Know\u201d which contained the classic \u201cPoor Georgie\u201d, 1993\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t No Other\u201d which featured the hit single \u201cRuffneck\u201d and 1996\u2019s \u201cBad As I Wanna B\u201d, which featured the smash hits \u201cCold Rock A Party\u201d (featuring Missy Elliott) and \u201cKeep On Keepin\u2019 On\u201d produced by Jermaine Dupri and featuring Xscape.<\/p>\n
Throughout her career Lyte has collaborated with a slew of artists like Janet Jackson, Brandy, The Roots as well as appearing on the posse track \u201cSticka\u201d featuring Ice-T, Ice Cube and Yours Truly off of Terminator X\u2019s 1994 album \u201cSuper Bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyte is also an accomplished actress appearing in several films such as \u201cPlayas\u2019s Ball\u201d, \u201cA Luv Tale\u201d, \u201cFly By Night\u201d, \u201cCivil Brand\u201d and \u201cTrain Ride.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyte has also done extensive television appearing on \u201cNew York Undercover\u201d, \u201cIn The House\u201d, \u201cHalf & Half\u201d, \u201cThe District\u201d, \u201cMTV\u2019s Celebrity Rap Superstar\u201d and \u201cMoesha\u201d, to name a few.<\/p>\n
In 2006, Lyte was honored at VH1\u2019s Hip Hop Honors annual gala where fellow lady MC\u2019s like Da Brat, Remy Ma and Lil\u2019 Kim performed some of her biggest hits.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte has also been involved in the fashion industry opening a clothing boutique called Shaitel in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n
In 2006, Lyte donated personal items such as turntables, records and other items from the early part of her career to The Smithsonian Institution.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte has also had a successful career in voiceovers, doing ad work for popular corporate brands.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte has also been named President of The Los Angeles Chapter Of The Recording Academy, becoming the first African-American to do so.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte has also started \u201cHip Hop Sister Network\u201d, where female hip-hop artists have a platform to share their talents and network.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte has also started \u201cHip Hop Sisters Foundation\u201d, a non-profit organization which educates youth around the world on subjects as diverse as financial empowerment, health and wellness, educational opportunities and mentorship. Advisory board members count Russell Simmons, Faith Evans, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Jada Pinkett Smith, Melanie Fiona, Kelly Price and Dr. Benjamin Chavis as members.<\/p>\n
In 2012, MC Lyte announced a scholarship fund where a recipient will receive a $100,000 scholarship for school.<\/p>\n
MC Lyte is a pioneer and one of the most respected female MC\u2019s in hip-hop history.<\/p>\n
