 I don’t cover a lot (well any lol) of “local hip hop” on this column but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any worth covering. To me talent is talent no matter where it originates.  Talent is definitely the reason we’re featuring Virginia emcee Derek 32Zero. This emcee combines substance with style and energy in his brand of hip hop. I vividly remember the 1^st time I saw him perform live years ago. Well he’s still going strong and has new music on deck for fans old and new. Check out our conversation.

BROWN SUGAR- When did you fall in love with hip hop?

DEREK 32ZERO- When I met Sanaa Lathan  (laughs) no, seriously, I would say specifically Big Daddy Kane’s “Ain’t No Half Steppin” that was the first song I knew front to back. I actually did the write down, pause the tape method, and kept reviewing it like a study guide till I got it right.

BROWN SUGAR- Ha! Dope lol

BROWN SUGAR -How long have you been an emcee?
DEREK 32ZERO- Since I graduated college, the University of South Carolina, go gamecocks! Ha. I had been rhyming, writing and performing since I was in middle school. But that was just rapping. I became an emcee in college though for sure. It was a definitive moment in my life, where I found my voice. It was a moment when I was also finding myself on a personal and spiritual level.  I truly began to understand what it took to be an emcee from battling, going off the top, freestyling, recording, songwriting, and performing.

BROWN SUGAR- Describe what inspires you & your creative process music wise.
DEREK 32ZERO- Life inspires me. My music is a direct reflection of my thoughts and emotions, what I’m going through in everyday life. What I observe, my family, children, job situation, my faith. The creative process is very therapeutic for me. Sounds corny (laugh) but once I have an opportunity and a way to “get it out” it feels so good. Check the “feels good” record on starchpress.com (laughs). And hopefully, the honesty of my music will inspire others as well. Musicians, artists, movies, books, experiences all influence how and what I do. I feel as though I have a responsibility to be as accurate and skillful as possible. Everybody can’t create, but most of us share the same experiences, wants, and/or desires. I strive to be that voice for the people.

BROWN SUGAR- Is there an artist that you would still like to work with?
DEREK 32ZERO- Hip hop artists: Andre 3000, Black Thought, Ghostface, Sean Price, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), Cee-Lo –the emcee.  Those are off the top of my head.

Other genres: Jay Kay from Jamiroqui, Lenny Kravitz, Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mary Mary, Stevie Wonder again just off of my head the top. The great and amazing and crazy part about my experience, however is that I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of my favorite artists already like Bilal, Pos from De La Soul, Lady Mecca (ladybug from Digable Planets,) Skillz, Nottz of course, Jon Bibbs, Hezekiah, Truck North, House Shoes, Saskwatch: (my favorite emcee and fellow collaborator and Ugly People crew member), Dwele, Dj Bee, Dj Lowkey. Not bad for at-risk youth counselor. (Laughs)

BROWN SUGAR- That’s quite a list! Lots of people are trying to get to where you are. What are your 3 tips to an aspiring emcee?

DEREK 32ZERO-

• Respect yourself as an artist and demand respect. Often times, emcees are given zero respect, and definitely less respect than singers. Less or no pay for shows, doing shows with no sound checks, doing promo shit for “exposure,” or “for the love,” don’t work to win the state championship i.e. “I’m the best in Norfolk, or VA” work to be the best worldwide, having ciphers after shows with people that couldn’t get on the bill!!! Really? Have u ever seen an r&b cipher after a show? Hahaha, etc., etc.
• Practice, practice, practice. Songwriting, freestyling, show tapes, studio work, attacking the beat from different angles. Practice in the car, in the bathroom, while u fucking, at work (laughs). You have to put time in to get positive results. Stay diligent and good things will happen.
• Know the history. Listen to those that came before. Research. Get into all genres of music. Don’t limit yourself to “what’s popular.” Today that means “what’s dumb and dumber.” And this is more so a life lesson as well. Have no fear. Too many people don’t or cant. Be the one who does. And have a plan, goal, and measure of success. Many of my favorite artists won’t go platinum or win a Grammy, but their influence is so much greater than any accolade they could receive.

BROWN SUGAR- Word! And um yeah interesting practice places lol

BROWN SUGAR-Any embarrassing stage stories that you wanna share?
DEREK 32ZERO- At 13 I was part of a fake BBD group. We performed at Norfolk State University homecoming and got pennies thrown at us! (Laughs) I’ve forgotten lyrics before, stepped on and knocked chords out while performing, but that’s part of the “growing pains.” The key is that with so much preparation, confidence and fearlessness I have for my craft, things happen and really make little difference. One time my group, The U.G.L.Y. people performed at an open mic venue and the mics, lights, and sound went out during the performance. But we didn’t stop, we didn’t flinch, we practiced and practiced and were unflappable to the point that when we finished people were walking up to us asking “how did ya”ll plan that? That was dope!” I’m thinking, how did we plan for everything to go out? (laughs) That just shows that resilience and belief we had and I still have to fight and spread this message. And I’m only human, so things will happen. I can’t really think of anything that would embarrass me now.

BROWN SUGAR -What’s the state of hip hop in VA & in Hip Hop as a whole?
DEREK 32ZERO -There are skilled emcees. There are very unpolished /wack emcees. There are average emcees that are popular due to backing and funding. There are a zillion and one rappers, studios and producers alike. There’s always hope, but the ability to make music is so much easier now. All u need is a computer and some paper, cash, dinero, for a computer program and you’re good. Hip-hop has always been a reflection of black culture and what is accepted. Right now, being a dumb nigga is cool. And being a dumb nigga that really can’t rhyme is even cooler. So be it. My job right now is to continue doing what I do and teach my children. Hopefully I can reach someone else’s family too in the process.

BROWN SUGAR -What can fans except from you in 2013?
DEREK 32ZERO -Hopefully this “I’m Not Bargaining” project with Nottz will come out. I’m also working on a project with Jon Bibbs under the greatest band name ever, “The Fanny Pack All-Stars.” I’m also working on a new solo project entitled, “Sunny Side of the Street.” Working on a project with a French producer as well. Just trying to build the brand. So I’m still continuing to write and work and hopefully provide people with something that they can listen to and keep for a lifetime, not just for the moment. Oh yeah, and I’m coaching my son and daughter’s soccer and basketball teams and I’m looking forward to kicking butt! (laughs) And staying married to my beautiful wife, and not producing any more babies. (laughs). That’s it. The end. Thank you for your time and continued efforts to support the arts. Peace.

April 18th – Grandmaster Caz a.k.a. Grandmaster Casanova Fly, of The Cold Crush Brothers, was born Curtis Fisher in Brooklyn, New York on this day in 1961.

Caz was first introduced to hip-hop culture in the early 1970’s when he attended a block party where hip-hop founder DJ Kool Herc was spinning.

Caz, soon after, teamed with DJ Disco Wiz and formed The Mighty Force DJ crew.

Caz would double his duties in The Mighty Force as both a DJ and an MC, one of the first people to ever do so.

Caz would then later join the legendary Cold Crush Brothers, whose original line-up included DJ Charlie Chase, Easy AD, The Original DJ Tony Tone, Whipper Whip, Mr. Tee and Dot-A-Rock, who all appeared with Caz in hip-hop’s first film 1983’s “Wild Style”.

But Caz would be best known for his lyrical contributions to rap’s first and most influential release ever 1979’s “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang.

This would come about when Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson’s son Joey heard Cold Crush manager Henry Jackson rapping along with Caz’s verse on a tape of one of the group’s live performances while flipping pizzas part-time in a restaurant.

Joey Robinson asked Jackson, who would become known as Big Bank Hank in The Sugar Hill Gang if he had more rhymes to audition for a group his mother was putting together for the still unheard of label.

Hank replied in the affirmative and immediately asked Caz for more rhymes.
Caz gave Hank, who previously was not an MC, free reign of his rhyme book with the understanding that he would compensated later.

Caz would never be compensated until this day for rap’s most legendary recording ever.

Caz, however would release four albums of his own over the years 1992’s “The Grandest Of Them All”, 2004’s “You Need Stitches – The Tuff City Sessions – 1982–1988”, 2006’s “Rare And Unreleased – Old School Hip-Hop – ’86–’87” and 2008’s “Mid Life Crisis”.

Grandmaster Caz has also appeared on recordings by Chris Stein, DJ Signify, DJ Haitian Star, DJ Parker Lee, Mark The 45 King, as well as several one-off 12 inch singles of his own not released on albums.

In 1999, Caz was inducted into The Technics DJ Hall Of Fame and in 2008 he was inducted in The Bronx Walk Of Fame.

Today, Grandmaster Caz works as a celebrity tour guide for Hush Hip-Hop Tours.

In 2012, Caz co-starred in Ice-T’s documentary film “Something From Nothing – The Art Of Rap”.

April 16th – Hip-Hop inventor DJ Kool Herc was born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, on this day in 1955.

As a young child growing up in Jamaica, Herc heard all the sounds and music of the Jamaican “sound systems” DJ’s and the MC’s that chatted or toasted over the music.

These elements would be the nucleus of hip-hop culture.

Herc moved with his family to The Bronx, New York in 1967 and brought his Jamaican musical sensibilities with him.

Playing on the basketball team at The Alfred E. Smith Career And Technical Education High School in The Bronx, he earned the nick-name Hercules from his teammates because of his imposing and intimidating size, henceforth his future DJ name which he also used when he was a part of the graffiti crew known as The Ex-Vandals.

In the early 1970’s, Herc began deejaying and experimenting with two copies of the same record and looping the instrumental break-beat parts over and over to create an almost new piece.

Some of the records Herc would do this with were “The Mexican” by Babe Ruth, “Bongo Rock” by The Incredible Bongo Band, “It’s Just Begun” by The Jimmy Castor Bunch and a live version of James Brown’s “Give It Up Or Turnit Loose”.

Herc introduced his new DJ technique at a back to school party at the housing project his family lived in at 1520 Sedwick Avenue in The Bronx on August 11th, 1973. This date is widely regarded as the birthday and birth place of hip-hop.

Herc then began talking along and toasting with the music he played, a la Jamaican “toasting” style, and then soon acquired the talents of Coke La Rock who would take care of the vocal parts of Herc’s parties, hence becoming rap’s music first MC.

Herc was then later joined by DJ Clark Kent and The “N” Twins and the collective became known as “The Herculoids”.

Soon the notorious street gangs that used to roam the mean streets of The Bronx started to slowly disappear as many youths started to immerse themselves in hip-hop culture.

In 1984, Herc appeared in the Orion Pictures hip-hop film “Beat Street” as himself with other hip-hop pioneers, and Herc disciples, such as Afrika Bambaataa, The Treacherous Three and Melle Mel, to name a few.

Herc would have an influence all those artists as well as Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jay, Grandmixer DXT, DJ Charlie Chase and countless others.

Herc would appear on Public Enemy DJ Terminator X’s sophomore album “Super Bad”, marking the first time Herc’s voice was heard on a released recording, bringing tears to the hip-hop pioneer’s eyes upon first listening.

DJ Kool Herc continues to tour the world performing and dazzling audiences with his precise and intricate mixing and usage of break-beats.

In 2007, Herc became involved in a project to prevent the Sedgwick building from being sold and turned into condominiums. Eventually the work and efforts of Herc and others paid off as New York State eventually allowed the property to be eligible for national and state registers to be declared as “the birthplace of hip-hop”.

In 2011, Herc fell ill with kidney stones, and complications that arose from them, and was hospitalized at St. Barnabas Hospital without health insurance.

With mounting medical bills, some members of the hip-hop community began initiatives and fundraisers to help the pioneer with his mounting medical bills.

Herc himself and his family would also soon start a foundation at his website to help others facing the same sort of medical obstacles.

DJ Kool Herc’s importance can never be overstated. He is simply the inventor and creator of hip-hop culture.

Omg I’m reviewing this documentary as a 30something, wow, but anyway if we think about the 1^st time we fell in love it was probably in our twenties. Newlywed Shod Harris takes a fresh and funny look at relationships in his series, TWENY. Discussing everything from sexual attraction, to break ups and everything in between. We sat down for a Brown Sugar interview about the 4 part series. Be sure to click the links at the bottom and check it out.

BROWN SUGAR- What is TWENTY?

SHOD HARRIS- Twenty is a docu-series I created that looks at everyday topics and conversation pieces through the eyes of twenty somethings.  Those topics range from sex, marriage, cheating, marriage, Christianity, relationships and whatever else I could think of or felt was interesting.  Pretty much it’s just simple things that everybody goes through.

 BROWN SUGAR- What led you to create the series?

SHOD HARRIS -That’s an interesting story, at first I was joking around saying I wanted to write a book on relationships since I used to jokingly call myself a relationship guru.  Then while I was joking, people were saying that you should really do that.  I knew writing really wasn’t my forte so I just decided that I was just going to do a video on it.  I wanted to have the video about people in their twenties because I think when you are in your twenties you go through the most life changes and overall just learning about yourself.  If you really think about it when you are nineteen or twenty, you think you know a lot but you really don’t know anything but by the time you are twenty-nine or thirty, you more than likely have kids, been through serious relationships, been through college, so your life experiences are definitely different.

BROWN SUGAR- You explore four topics within the idea of relationships, which of the four episodes do you think was most difficult for people to talk about?

SHOD HARRIS -I personally don’t think any of the parts were particularly difficult for people to talk about but if I had to pick one it would have to be the section in episode four about cheating.  It seemed like people weren’t really sure about why they do what they do.  I think that and the episode on sex were probably the most interesting.

BROWN SUGAR- After finishing the project what is the state of twenty something’s when it comes to love and relationships?

SHOD HARRIS- After finishing the project I realized that people who are in their younger twenties really aren’t sure what they really want out of relationships or what they are looking for in the opposite sex are things that are small or superficial.  I also realized that when people get in their upper twenties people are usually looking for something real.

BROWN SUGAR- What’s your goal of for the series?

SHOD HARRIS- I said that my goal for the series was to present young people especially black people in a realistic way which is intelligent, funny, and honest.  I feel like the media today only paints the picture of young blacks as being ignorant, materialistic, violent, ratchet and all of that.  So I just want to show the reality of what young blacks are really like and how they feel about these topics.

BROWN SUGAR- How much total footage did you have, talk to us about the process of editing and putting the pieces together?

SHOD HARRIS -Overall it took about 6 months for me to arrange, record the interviews, edit and promote it.  Recording the interviews was the funniest part, just to see how everybody responded to the questions.  Even after I recorded the interviews I still wasn’t sure about how I was going to put it all together so I feel that part took the longest.  I’m extremely proud of the way that it came out though.

BROWN SUGAR- What’s the future of creating Independent docs?

SHOD HARRIS- I know my future in creating these independent documentaries looks to be pretty bright.  I have a couple of video projects that I’m currently working on as we speak.  One is a project on how people can make it in the music industry and then two more other projects that fall within the Twenty series.  So I’ll definitely be putting in some work all year.

BROWN SUGAR- What is the Rebel Society and what can we expect from you in 2013?

SHOD HARRIS- The Rebel Society is an upcoming full service marketing firm that I just recently founded that works with small businesses and brands to market their products and services.  We help our clients by offering and handling everything that our client would need to get their product to the consumer.  Our services include email marketing, social media marketing, media production, public relations, guerilla marketing and more.  In 2013 you can expect a lot of material from us just from a branding perspective.  We plan on putting out great, thought provoking and entertaining content as well as pushing our clients to great success.  To be successful you have to work harder and be smarter than everyone else and that is what we plan to do!

“Be the Change You Want to See in the World”- What author Rob Hill Sr. is doing impact the next generation. Learn about his 100 Kings Walk as well as tips for raising a King in this world.

Every day we wake up to news casts  and headlines filled with the death of young African-American males. Holidays like mother’s day bring about conversations about boys being raised in a fatherless society. At a time when the future of our young men has reached a critical mass, many are seeking ways to positively impact the youth. Author Rob Hill Sr. has decided that reading about it is just not good enough anymore. He’s enlisted the help of his community to make a stand this June with what he’s calling the 100 Kings Walk.

BROWNSUGAR- What is the goal of the 1000 Kings Walk and movement?

ROB HILL SR.- The walk will be held on June 1st of this year. We want to inspire young people to live extraordinary lives. Our pillars are Inspire, Impact, and Influence. We want their dreams to stay alive, we want their spirits to stay hopeful, and we want them to be more than successful, we want them to be remembered, forever.

BROWNSUGAR- What inspired you to begin this movement?

ROB HILL SR. – I’m a servant by nature. I like to help, assist, and build up. As a young man growing up I didn’t have a big sense of identity, legacy, or things like that. However, through my many ups and downs I’ve just learned the importance of knowing who you are and living for something.

BROWNSUGAR- Can you share how becoming a father and raising your son has changed your life?

ROB HILL SR. – My son is the inspiration for all I do. I gave him my name and I understand that there’s legacy in a name. I pray the way I live my life gives him an advantage in his. Everything I do now has purpose, and I’d say that’s what’s really changed things for me. I know who I am and I know my purpose.

BROWNSUGAR- As a young father raising a son can you give other dads 3 tips for raising a king?

ROB HILL SR. – Purpose. Identity. Legacy. I call it “PIL”. You have to have a firm understanding of all three of these things. What is your purpose? Who are you? What will people remember about you? Asking questions like this can really raise a man’s consciousness up, and when you do that he becomes a King.

BROWNSUGAR- For the mothers raising sons alone what message would you want to give them?

ROB HILL SR. – I want them to know that regardless of how they feel, they aren’t alone. We all have a duty and responsibility to one another and the men that I’m working with take that extremely serious. I encourage mothers to reach out and actively look for role models for their son’s. Boys need POSITIVE interaction with men. Can’t get discouraged, takes an extreme amount of resilience to raise a King.

BROWNSUGAR- How can people get involved?

ROB HILL SR. – There are many ways to get involved, the first being getting

registered at  thousandkingswalk.eventbrite.com You can also email thousandkingswalk@gmail .com to become a volunteer for the event as well. They can also use that email for all inquiries surrounding the walk, especially if they’d like to become a vendor. The deadline for that is April 15th.

BROWNSUGAR- Fresh off the success of your book -”For Single People Who Still Understand The Value of Relationships” do you have any future books in the works for us?

ROB HILL SR. – I’m currently working on my third book and it should be out in September of this year. It’s titled “Love wins, always: A book on Perspective.” Won’t give too much away, but it should definitely have people thinking and operating differently.

BROWNSUGAR -What does the balance of 2013 hold in store for Rob Hill Sr?

ROB HILL SR. – Prayerfully it holds consistent growth. All I aspire to do is build people up, in whatever capacity they allow me to. Whether it be healing hearts, encouraging Kings, or organizing events, I’m committed to doing whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to make a difference.

Salt of hip-hop trio Salt-n-Pepa turns 43 today (Thursday).

• The Queens and Brooklyn hip-hop trio formed in 1985. The originally called themselves Super Nature. They were one of the first all-female rap crews.
• “The Showstopper,” an answer record to Doug E. Fresh‘s hit “The Show,” was their first single.
• 1990′s Blacks’ Magic – recorded while Pepa was pregnant — was their first on which Spinderella contributed vocals. It featured “Let’s Talk About Sex.”
• The 1993 effort Very Necessary included “Shoop” and “Whatta Man” featuring En Vogue.
• Their last album, Brand New, debuted in 1997.
• In 2007, The Salt-n-Pepa Show debuted on VH1

6p EST: Busta Rhymes: The Coming in it’s entirety! We’re a day late…of course this doesn’t over shadow Teddy P and Eazy E, but here at Fresh we do salute classic bodies of work! Released March 26, 1996

The Coming is the debut album by former Leaders of the New School member, Busta Rhymes, released in 1996 by Elektra Records.^[9] The Comingfeatures rapping from Def Squad members Redman and Keith Murray as well as a guest appearance from Q-Tip and singing from Zhané and different future Flipmode Squad members. One notable song on the album is “Keep It Movin” which features Busta’s former group Leaders of the New School, and it would mark the last time they would ever make a song together. It has production from many famed producers and production teams such as DJ Scratch, Easy Mo Bee and The Ummah.

The Coming was a critical and commercial success for Busta Rhymes. It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1996 and has since received a platinum certification from RIAA. Allmusic gave at a near perfect 4.5 out of 5 star rating. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic says that “Busta Rhymes has never had such an impressive showcase for his rhymes as he does on The Coming“.^[1] It boasts the hit single “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check” which reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996. It was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance ^[10]and Steve Huey of Allmusic says that the song “catapulted Busta Rhymes into solo superstardom”.^[11] It also ended up sporting another hit single, “It’s a Party” featuring Zhané. The Coming has sold 793,000 copies by June 2009. The Coming also along with When Disaster Strikes and Extinction Level Event, is seen as a classic rap album. ^[12]

Eric Lynn Wright^[ (September 7, 1963 – March 26, 1995), better known by his stage name Eazy-E who is affectionately called “The Godfather Of Gangsta Rap” was an American rapper who performed solo and in the hip hop group N.W.A. Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright inCompton, California. His uncle is the singer and band member Charles Wright, who formed the Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. After dropping out of high school in the tenth grade, he supported himself primarily by selling drugs before investing in Ruthless Records and becoming a rapper. When Ruthless artists Dr. Dre and Ice Cube wrote “Boyz-n-the-Hood“, Dre, Cube, and Eazy formed N.W.A. After DJ Yella, MC Ren, and Arabian Prince joined the group, N.W.A released N.W.A. and the Posse. In 1988, they released their most controversial album, Straight Outta Compton. The group released two more albums and then disbanded after Eazy released Dr. Dre from his contract.

On a recent Friday night in Hampton Roads, VA I was invited to attend a listening event for soul artist, Rashard Small’s new project “An Urban Love Affair”. Small’s Soul Revolution family set the tone for the event with professional and friendly pre event moments. As we mingled it was clear that Rashard was loved by family, friends and other artists. The lobby of the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center was filled with other local artists there to support their fellow crooner. Fans of his music call themselves Rebels and they were there in tees, wearing VIP access hang tags. Clearly this was going to be a fun night of great music.

While we waited I chatted with rock star singer and stylist K’Bana Blaq about his expectations for the album and the evening. He said he expected us to embark upon “a very soulful journey”. When asked how he described Rashard’s music he said it was “honest, gritty, and raw”, a sound he said would take us “back to basics”. K’Bana was not the only Fuzz Band member in the house that night as bandmate Nakia Madry- Smith was there as well. The vocalist also doubles Lead singer of D’Nik, when asked to describe Rashard she said he was “a great performer and writer. Madry-Smith said his music was “filling the gap” and was a “welcome return of soul”. I hadn’t seen Mr. Small perform a full show since 2012 and was anxious to see how he had grown as an artist. The anticipation of all in attendance was high as we waited for the show to begin.

We entered the beautiful Ella Fitzgerald theatre of the center in Newport News, VA and were treated to a 3 song sample show of Small’s music. The catchy lead single from the upcoming project “An Urban Love Affair”, 1234eva immediately gets the crowd into the swing of things as they sing along to the catchy hook. Like most of his music the song is clearly dedicated to his beautiful wife Regina who also sings BGVs. The family affair doesn’t stop there as Rashard’s brother Demarkis Vinson also serves as co- Musical Director and drummer for the Renaissance Band who played for Rashard and his singers. The audience was then treated to a song off Small’s first project and the New Orleans tinted tune was super hot. Last up was a cover of VA’s own D’Angelo’s hit Brown Sugar. You know I dug this instantly. ?  The night was truly a love affair with soul music. 

After the sampler we entered the listening suite where we heard a few cuts from the new album and watched the recently premiered video for 1234eva (watch it below).  While we listened and snacked (on food catered by Rashard, yeah he can cook too) I made my way around to talk to some more band members and finally the man of the hour. Rashard’s vocals were completed by the Renaissance Band headed by Musical Director Tavis Simmons of Band Geek Musiq. Simmons’ wife, Nu,  also sings backgrounds with Rashard. It was truly a family affair on the stage that evening. I spoke with Simmons, and he had this to say- First of all “I miss soul music”, and with this album “we’re recreating the music I grew up on”.

Finally after snatching him away from well wishers and fans I got to ask the man of the hour a few questions, the VA native was all smiles, clearly feeling all the love from the evening.

Brown Sugar- What’s your definition of soul?

Rashard Small- Soul is a feeling, not just what you hear. You can’t just hear soul.

Brown Sugar- What’s your inspiration for being an artist?

Rashard Small- Life experiences, the ups and downs of love. My marriage to Regina is also at the center of my inspiration to write and perform.

Brown Sugar- You have your wife, your cousin, and your brother here on stage tonight. How is to work with family in this industry?

Rashard Small- It’s a blessing to have family that can see your dreams. Even though it can be difficult, having them around means having people I can trust. It’s a good feeling.

Brown Sugar-What message would give to people who have never heard of you and your music?

Rashard Small- It’s soulful, honest, genuine, and rugged. It’s homage to soul.

March is Women’s History Month. I’m celebrating a woman that is blazing a trail of her own! Nina Brewton is a published author, speaker, vocalist and more. In 2012 she published her 1^st book, a memoir. If you are under 40 and can write a successful memoir then clearly you have LIVED. Nina has so much life and light to share with the world that I wanted to make sure my readers got a taste as well. This month marks the release of her 2^nd book “Heart of a Queen: Poetry and Prose for the Soul”. Read all about her work and her love for music and much more in our Brown Sugar interview. Enjoy!

When did you fall in love with hip hop *in my Sid Shaw voice*? 

Lol I mean, since you asked…

I first fell in love with hiphop when I was about 11. It actually started with Too Short’s The Ghetto, which sampled Donny Hathaway’s song by the same name. The bass line could be heard for miles and miles, beating from the back of cat’s cars. I’m f rom the Midwest, where West coast hip hop was more popular.

Then there were groups like Questionmark Asylum, also from the West coast but had more East coast flavor which was more my style. From there I got into groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang.
Does music play a role in your creative process as a writer? How?

I find myself inspired by so many artists. An artists’ influence on my writing can depend on the topics they cover in their music. This is why finding quality music is so important to me. Whatever genre, from love to politics, my favorite artists have always taken me outside my world into new ones.

For example, in my memoir Dramas of a Bald Head Queen I share that I first came to love my Blackness in middle school after being exposed to the beauty and strength of artists like Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and the like. I found myself researching African culture and the history of Africans in America after becoming familiar with their music and talent.

I was 14 in 1993 when I first saw the video for Me’Shell Ndegeocello’s Dred Loc, on Video Soul. I sought out  her debut album Plantation Lullabies, which is where I first heard the name of writer Ntozake Shange. Shortly thereafter I found myself in my neighborhood library where I discovered the choreopoem For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.

Music should not only entertain us but should teach us something that will lead us to learning more about our world and, in turn, about ourselves as we continue to grow.

When did you know you wanted to write?
I can’t remember not wanting to be a writer. I remember begging my father to teach me how to write as my older brother was already in school learning. I would be right beside them at four years old, tracing over the letters on his first grade worksheets.

I began journaling when I was about 10 (I wish I had kept that old stuff!). From there, I began to dabble in poetry and fall in love with writers in various genres from all walks of life.

Any self publishing tips for aspiring writers? How do writers find editors?

I actually came across my editor, Benjamin Daniel, on the world-altering Twitter. We’ve been working together since late 2010 and I have now published two books under the  Write Right Publications imprint.

Also, research, research, research. Always be willing to take the sound, constructive (that’s important!) advice of others. There are a NUMBER of ways to realize a dream of being a published author.
What three things would you share with women in your age demographic? Anything for the fellas?

The three greatest tips for that I can give (for anyone) is:

1) Believe in yourself and be your number one fan! Many times when you’re striving to work as an independent artist or entrepreneur you’ll get discouraged and will want others to encourage you, to keep you moving forward. The hands of others won’t always be available so we must rely on self=motivation and faith in the vision that allowed us to step out of fear in the first place!

2) Speaking of the encouragement of others, although there may be times when we feel alone, we, as humans, are not meant to be alone on our journeys. Be mindful of the people with whom you associate and the ones you let in to your heart both personally and professionally. Those with whom you involve yourself should add to your life, not take away from it. If your energy is disrupted every time you’re in someone’s presence, remove yourself from their life!

3) Don’t EVER be driven by the desire for fortune or fame. Your movements and dealings MUST be purpose-driven. You will find that apparent failures don’t hurt as  much when you keep the big picture and purpose in view.

What’s next for Nina Brewton?

On March 5th I released a second book, a collection of poetry and prose, Heart of a Queen – Poetry and Prose from the Soul. The book was not only released under the Write Right imprint but debuted with These Long Tailed Words, Mr. Daniel’s first book. Our goal with the dual release is to draw interest in Write Right Publications as we strive to not only represent ourselves as independent authors but as a one stop location, meeting the needs of the self-published author.

In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, we invite all to join us at Prince Books in downtown Norfolk for ‘An Afternoon with Write Right Publications’ as we share works from the authors’ recently released collections of poetry and prose.

Is Feminism a dirty word in our culture?

Hip Hop has long worn the crown of misogyny incarnate. Is this still the case, was it ever? Can I be a hip hop lover and a feminist? Can a man who loves songs filled with the word Bi*&h and Hoe truly love me on an intimate human level? I hope so. I think it’s possible to have someone who chooses not to belittle the woman in their life based on archaic thinking. However when social media conversations about feminism occur, the voice of male hip hop lovers becomes a whisper. No replys, no RTs, nada. And the female voice is barely above a whisper in these social media conversations. It really makes me wonder if brown feminists are in the minority especially in Hip Hop.

When I hear feminist I think- Women have rights, they have intelligence, and they deserve to be treated equally and with respect. I look back at American culture from Anti bellum slavery to the 1950’s and the enduring women’s history movement that has made it possible for me to have many of the rights I deserve. I think of all the women and men who have fought literally and figuratively to knock down walls based on gender bias, that’s what I think when I hear feminism/feminists.  When I hear misogyny- I think of the demeaning of women based on purely on gender. A misogynist treats a woman as less than, as an animal even, in the way he speaks about and to her, the way he thinks, and the way he treats her. Misogyny is defined by Webster as “hatred of women”, earliest usage? 1656. So yeah the idea of hating women and expressing in the culture isn’t new. BUT I digress.

When I listen to an album like Watch The Throne I hear two rappers who have matured A LOT, and the traces of misogyny are all but gone in many of Jay Z’s lyrics, Kanye is a work in progress though lol The point being I LOVE this album but I still listen out for lyrics that offend /demean me. And when I find them, I listen once or twice then I ffwd passed them, I choose not to deal with it. They have a song “That’s My Bitch”, beat wise it’s sick. They are in essence trying to give props to beautiful women of color and our exclusion from art and culture but to do so we are refereed to as Bithches? Damn… Then in the track list Niggas in Paris is bleeped out as Ni**as but it’s okay to spell out Bi**h? ? That bothers me, and I feel like it should bother any sensible person. 

I’m an academic and a music lover so to me lyrics matter, I believe we absorb the words we hear and read. I believe that the lyrics we hear become apart of our collective thinking.  I love Hip Hop culture but sometimes that means pushing fast forward, or having an awkward convo with a twitter follower or two. Some people will swear I’m being too deep but I disagree. I think lyrics and intent matter. In 2013 there are still people who believe that women are a lesser gender and I believe culture and music play a part in condoning these archaic ideas. True feminism shouldn’t threaten you as a man. I’m not coming for “your’ spot, I’m just existing in my rightful place, next to you, not behind you. Hopefully this non-traditional hip hop loving feminist can find my “perfect verse over a tight beat”… We’ll see
